FLEXIBLE SIGMOIDOSCOPY - PREPARATION FOR THE TEST

To obtain the full benefit of the exam and allow a thorough inspection, the rectum and sigmoid colon must be clean. Preparation usually involves drinking clear liquids the day before along with taking enemas and/or laxatives. Specific instructions for preparation are provided beforehand.

The following method is suggested by Dr. Heyns to clean the rectum and sigmoid colon:

 

LIST OF CLEAR LIQUID

SERVING SUGGESTION (Improve taste)

Drink 6 – 8 glasses throughout the day. Adequate liquid combats dehidration

  • Water & Colddrink (cola, lemonade, ect.)
  • Fruit juice (without pulp)
  • Tea & Coffee (black)
  • Clear Soup & Jelly
  • Hard Candies allowed
  • Mix first sachet with 50 ml lukewarm water until dissolved
  • Add 250ml liquid (Lemon Twist). Sip slowly.
  • Repeat steps 1 and 2 using the second sachet on the time that is indicated.
 

 

MORNING PROCEDURE (BEFORE 12H00)

DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE DAY OF PROCEDURE
Have a small breakfast (toast)
  • 08:00am – Take first sachet dosage
  • Consume clear liquid as indicated above.
  • 17:00pm – Take second sachet dosage
    Consume liquid until bed-time.
  • No further liquid for morning procedure (NPM)

 

AFTERNOON PROCEDURE (AFTER 12H00)

DAY BEFORE PROCEDURE DAY OF PROCEDURE
  • Have normal meals until lunch. Thereafter clear liquid as indicated above should be taken.
  • Consume liquid until bed-time.

 

  • Take second sachet dosage  – consume liquid until 10:00am (NPM)

 


GUIDELINES

  • COLO-PREP normally takes effect within 30 minutes and results in loose stools approximately 1 - 2 hours after the dosage has been taken.
  • Clear liquid of your choice should be taken regularly – it will speed up the process and help to combat dehidration. (approximately 7 glasses of clear liquid should be taken throughout the day).
  • It is advised that you stay close to a bathroom for at least 1 hour after the commence of the stools.
